About ABS Horticulture

27+ Years GrowingBeautiful Gardens inMelbourne's East

What started in a grandfather's garden in Camberwell became a career, a qualification from Burnley, and since 1998, a business built on one idea: your garden deserves the same care as the home behind it. A small team. Real continuity. Every visit.

Our Story

It Started in a Garden in Camberwell

Some of my earliest memories are in my grandfather's garden in Camberwell. He grew everything, vegetables, roses, fruit trees, and I was the kid who actually wanted to help. Not because anyone made me, but because I loved watching things grow. That garden is where this all started.

That early fascination led to a Diploma of Applied Science (Horticulture) at the University of Melbourne's Burnley campus, one of Australia's oldest horticultural colleges, founded in 1891. I went on to lecture in landscape construction and design at Chisholm Institute TAFE, and was featured in Outdoor Design and Living magazine. But what I kept coming back to was the hands-on work: being in gardens, understanding how they change across seasons, and helping homeowners protect something they'd invested in.

In 1998, I founded ABS Horticulture with a simple mission: bring genuine horticultural expertise to residential gardens in Melbourne's inner east. Not a mow and blow service, but a structured, seasonal approach that treats every garden as the living investment it is. I grew up in Glen Iris, went to school at Carey Grammar in Kew. These are my neighbourhoods. I know the soil, the microclimates, the heritage trees. Anthony, Sam, Rebecca and Grant visit the same properties month after month, learning every garden's personality and building the trust that only comes from consistency.

Today, ABS Horticulture serves 80+ active clients across Canterbury, Camberwell, Surrey Hills, Kew, Hawthorn, Balwyn, and the surrounding suburbs. Some clients have been with us since those early years, over 20 years of trust, beautiful gardens, and the kind of relationship that only comes from showing up, reliably, every single month.

What We Stand For

Our Values

01

Trust

You give us a key. We lock up when we leave. You come home to a garden that looks better than when you left. That's the level of trust we've built, and it's earned, not assumed.

02

Pride

Your garden reflects your home and your standards. When a neighbour stops to comment, when visitors notice the hedges, that's what we're working toward. We treat your garden like it represents us, because it does.

03

Consistency

Usually two people per visit, always from the same small team. Sam has been with us over a decade. We don't rotate crews or send strangers. Your garden gets people who remember what was done last month and what's planned for next.

04

Care

We don't rush through. If a shrub needs an extra few minutes of shaping, it gets them. If we notice early signs of disease, we flag it before it spreads. Your garden is treated properly, every single time.

Meet the Team

The People Behind Your Garden

A small, tightly-knit team who visit the same properties month after month. You'll recognise the faces. They'll know your garden.

Anthony Bennett

Founder & Horticulturist

The guy who still gets his hands dirty. Diploma of Applied Science (Horticulture) from the University of Melbourne (Burnley), former lecturer at Chisholm Institute TAFE, featured in Outdoor Design and Living magazine. Grew up in Glen Iris, schooled at Carey Grammar in Kew. Nearly three decades later, he still knows every plant in your garden by name.

Sam, operations manager at ABS Horticulture

Sam

Operations Manager

With a Certificate III in Landscaping, 15 years in the trade and over 10 of those with ABS, Sam is the face clients know first. He's been caring for their gardens longer than some of their neighbours have lived there. Anthony's right-hand in the field, Sam has built the kind of trust that only comes from showing up, consistently, year after year.

Rebecca Bennett, office manager and team member at ABS Horticulture

Rebecca Bennett

Office Manager & Team Member

The person who makes sure every visit runs on time, every call gets returned, and every detail is tracked. Rebecca manages scheduling, client communication, and the behind-the-scenes coordination that keeps the team and 80+ gardens running like clockwork.

Grant, team member at ABS Horticulture

Grant

Team Member

With a Certificate III in Horticulture and a Bachelor of Computer Science, Grant brings a unique combination of skills that come in handy both in the garden and the office. He notices the details: the edge that needs tightening, the weed before it seeds, the shrub that's ready for shaping.

Our Mission

Protecting Melbourne's Green Character

The leafy canopy of Canterbury, Camberwell, Kew, Hawthorn, and Surrey Hills didn't happen by accident. It was planted, tended, and protected by generations of homeowners who understood that a garden is part of a neighbourhood's character. We're committed to making sure that character survives, through bigger builds, denser development, and the temptation to pave over what takes patience to maintain.

A garden is living infrastructure, not decoration. The work we do protects the full green layer: front and back gardens, nature strips, and the mature trees that take decades to replace. Keeping Melbourne's eastern suburbs a place where the streets themselves are worth walking down.
