Soil Health Foundation

The Best Thing Happening in Your Garden Is Underground

When the mulch layer is right, everything above it thrives: healthier plants, fewer weeds, soil that actually holds moisture through a Melbourne summer.

What You Get

Professional Mulching that gets results

Mulching is the application of organic tree mulch, a raw mix of chopped trunk, branches, bark, and leaves, at 75-100mm depth across garden beds to suppress weeds, retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and build a living microbiome that feeds your plants from below. It's the single most impactful thing you can do for soil health in Melbourne's clay-heavy eastern suburbs. We apply and maintain mulch as part of our ongoing monthly care program, topping up wherever beds have thinned. During the Initial Clean Up (ICU), we lay a full foundation of mulch across all garden beds to give your garden the best possible start.

Why It Matters

What makes organic tree mulch so different from the bags at the hardware store?

I'll often ask new clients to show me their mulch. Usually it's pine bark from Bunnings, uniform brown chips, sometimes dyed, sitting on top of the soil doing very little. It looks tidy, and it does a basic job of moisture retention, but it doesn't build soil health. There's nothing living in it.

The organic tree mulch we use is a completely different product. It's a raw mix of chopped trunk, branches, bark, and leaves from local arborist work. This diversity of materials creates a naturally occurring microbiome, a living layer of beneficial fungi, bacteria, and organisms that actively break down the mulch and feed the soil beneath it. Over time, this biological activity improves soil structure, increases nutrient availability, and creates conditions where plants are naturally more resistant to pests and disease.

In Melbourne's clay-heavy eastern suburbs soils, this kind of biological soil improvement is particularly valuable. The organic matter helps break up clay, improves drainage, and creates the crumbly, well-aerated soil structure that most garden plants need to thrive.

Why Choose Us

Why homeowners trust ABS

Real Tree Mulch, Not Pine Bark

A diverse mix of trunk, branch, bark, and leaf material from local arborist work, biologically active from day one.

We Understand the Biology

Mulch isn't just a ground cover. Diploma-level training in soil science means we know how fungal networks, decomposition, and soil biology actually work.

75-100mm, No Guessing

Too thin and weeds push through. Too thick and roots suffocate. We apply at the correct depth every time and maintain it at every visit.

Collar Rot Prevention

We always keep mulch clear of stems and trunks. Piling mulch against bark is one of the most common causes of plant death, and we never make that mistake.

Up to 50% Less Watering

A proper mulch layer can reduce soil moisture evaporation by up to 50%, which matters in Melbourne summers when water restrictions kick in.

Clay Soil Specialists

Melbourne's eastern suburbs sit on heavy clay. Organic mulch is the best long-term treatment. It breaks up clay structure as it decomposes, improving drainage and aeration.

Monthly Care

What to expect as a client

1

Garden beds assessed at every monthly visit, with mulch topped up in any areas that have thinned below the optimal depth.

2

Only genuine organic tree mulch used, a diverse mix of trunk, bark, branch, and leaf material with active biological life.

3

Mulch kept clear of plant stems and trunks to prevent collar rot and moisture damage to bark.

4

A full seasonal mulch application when the existing layer has broken down significantly, typically once or twice per year.

5

Visible improvement in soil quality over time as the decomposing mulch layer feeds and conditions the ground beneath.

6

Dramatically reduced weed pressure in mulched beds compared to bare or thinly covered soil.

Ongoing vs One-Off

Mulch applied once breaks down, but a consistent program keeps the system alive

One of our long-term clients in Hawthorn has beautiful deep beds of established camellias and rhododendrons. When they first came to us, the beds were bare soil, hard clay that baked in summer and waterlogged in winter. We laid a proper mulch foundation and have been maintaining the depth at every monthly visit since. Three years in, the soil underneath is unrecognisable: dark, crumbly, full of worm activity. The camellias have never flowered better.

That transformation only happens with consistency. Mulch applied once breaks down within months. Weeds find gaps, soil loses its cover, and the biological processes stall. We top up wherever beds have thinned during regular monthly visits and apply a full seasonal refresh when needed. The fungi networks stay intact, moisture regulation stays consistent, and weed suppression remains effective year-round.
